Demographic decline, Labor shortages causing inflation and sluggish economic growth:

Declining demographics due to low fertility rates, aging population, net migration, and labor shortages in the developed countries has caused worrisome inflation.

To control inflation, the unemployment rate needs to be above 4.5% and keep the wages from spiraling upwards.

Currently the US unemployment rate is at 3.6%, Australia 3.4% and Japan 2.6%.

Hong Kong: 3.36%, Iceland: 2.5%, Luxembourg: 3.4%, Monaco: 3.2% , Netherlands: 3.36% , Norway: 2.5%, Singapore: 2.4% and Switzerland: 2.6%.

Canada and Portugal unemployment rate is above 5.5% and still experiencing labor shortages.

Japan:

The Japanese government is introducing labor market reforms that aim at increasing female and elderly labor participation. However, accepting more foreign workers is necessary to ensure a steady supply of labor to support economic growth.

The country was estimated to have had fewer than 800,000 babies born last year due to low fertility rates, the lowest number since records began in the 19th century. Official data released shows the proportion of Japanese over 65 at a record of 29.1% this year. Italy (24.5%), and Finland (23.6%) rank second and third respectively.

Australia, employers are not expecting a significant shift in available talent in 2023 due to an unemployment rate of 3.4%.

Canada, the proportion of businesses expecting a labor shortage as an obstacle over the next three months increased slightly to 31.1%.

Germany: The shortage of skilled workers is already slowing down growth in many industries, including the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors.. According to a recent survey by the Munich-based Ifo institute, 54% of businesses in the services sector were affected by labor shortages in July 2023.

USA: According to a report by NBC News, every branch of the U.S. military is struggling to meet its recruiting goals for 2022 and 2023. Overall, 10 million vacant jobs are pushing the wages upwards contributing to the inflationary forces.

All these countries are soon expected to turn to low-income countries for their labor and repopulation needs, creating very fierce competition.

Regular and orderly migration
  • Orderly migration can help ensure the safety and well-being of migrants. It allows governments to plan and allocate resources effectively, which can lead to better integration and support for migrants.
  • New York’s Mayor Adams Says Irregular Migrant Influx Will Cost New York City $12 Billion.

Most of the migrants are economic migrants but use asylum as a last resort.

What the government authorities should really be focusing on:

  • Improving legal pathways: Expanding legal pathways for migration, such as increasing the number of work visas or refugee resettlement programs, can provide alternatives to irregular migration.
  • International cooperation: Collaborating with other countries to share information, intelligence, and best practices can help disrupt human trafficking networks and prevent irregular migration and border crossings to avoid influx of unskilled migrants.
  • Work with professional organizations:  Expert knowledge is required to handle this complex issue of irregular and unintended migration. Let the professionals handle it.
